One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.

Finally he decided since the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway, it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. So, the farmer invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed shovels, and began to shovel dirt into the well.

All the other farm animals were very upset about this, because the donkey was their friend. But they discovered there was nothing they could do to help him. At first, when the donkey realized what was happening, he cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement, he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well, and was astonished at what he saw.

With every shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off, and take a step up on the dirt as it piled up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well, and trotted off!

MORAL LESSON:
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. But each trouble can be a stepping stone. What happens to you isn't nearly as important as how you react to it. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not giving up!

When the DIRTS of life come upon us – and all of us will become dirty – we can shake that dirt off by setting our minds and our belief toward God. The dirt (strugles of life) do not have to overcome us. We can allow God’s power to lift us above that dirt.

Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them

Shake it off, and take a step up!

  2. you make nice posts MG. sighh i thought i've already grown tired of aesop's fables then when i read your post.. well, i just wanna blow the dust off my aesop and start reading its contents again..

the moral lesson-- taking advantage of of the grimmer side of things.. if you would think about it, that's kinda hard to do. most of the time when obstacles present themselves to us, chances are we back down without even putting up a fight. i do that all the time. my spirits easily get dampened. but fromn now on, i will remember the donkey from the well. at some point, maybe soon, i will be that donkey and i will use the dirt to take me out of the well.

thanks for the post. keep them coming. ((:

p.s. i googled your story, hoping to find out who wrote it. i was disappointed it was written anonymously. whoever he is, well, he should be proud his fable has become so popular. ((:
