Temper Management

According to wikipedia,<strong>Anger</strong> is
 an automatic response to ill treatment. It is the way a person 
indicates he or she will not tolerate certain types of behaviour. It is a
 feedback mechanism in which an unpleasant stimulus is met with an 
unpleasant response.  Anger is an emotion related to one’s psychological
 interpretation of having been offended, wronged or denied and a 
tendency to undo that by retaliation. Anger as a normal emotion that 
involves a strong uncomfortable and emotional response to a perceived 
provocation<br />

Once again, our brother<strong> Bo Sanchez</strong> ,shared his insight on how to deal and <strong>manage</strong> our <strong>temper</strong>.<br />

How To Deal With Your Temper</h2>

       Do you lose your temper quickly?<br />

When you’re caught in traffic, do you lose your cool?<br />

Do you have shouting matches with your spouse?<br />

Do you yell at your kids often?<br />

Do you use degrading language?<br />

Do you <em>not</em> speak to people you’re angry with for days, weeks, or even months?<br />

If your answer is “Yes” to some of these questions, then you have a 
problem with patience. And you need to hear what I’m going to say today.<br />

Here’s my big message for you today:  Impatience means you lack trust
 in God. Many times, you’re impatient because you take matters in your 
hands. If you want to be patient, <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">learn</span> to take matters into God’s hands. (If you don’t understand this yet, it’s okay. By the end of this article, you will.)<br />

Let me tell you about two men who were blowing their top…<br />
<br />

<strong>Two Very Angry Brothers</strong></div>
 I love this very human story.<br />

Jesus was being rejected by a Samaritan Town. And James and John were so angry at them, they asked, <em>Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them? </em>(See Luke 9:52-56)<br />

James and John were so angry, they wanted to massacre an entire 
town. They wanted to kill men, women, and children. Including cute <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">babies</span>.  Fry them all to a crisp.<br />

In the brothers’ minds, it was their right to be angry.   To them, 
this was righteous anger.   Why? These Samaritans were making the most 
horrendous mistake of their lives. They were rejecting Jesus, the Son of
 the Living God.<br />

So they said, “Kill ‘em, Lord!”<br />

Here’s an important point: An angry person always thinks it’s his 
right that he should get angry. In his mind, it’s perfectly justifiable.<br />

But what did Jesus do?<br />

He rebuked them.<br />

Perhaps he said to them, “Look guys, once upon a time, you were 
hard-headed too. You were as obstinate and foolish as they were. But God
 didn’t throw fiery comets at you. <em>He was patient with you. </em> You should do the same.”<br />

<strong>Where Does Your Impatience Come From?</strong></div>

Let me tell you another story.<br />

One day, a husband and wife were at home eating breakfast.<br />

Right in front of the wife was their window, and through it, she could see her neighbor hanging clothes in the clothesline.<br />

“Look at those clothes! Their dirty!” she told her husband. “Does she even use detergent? My goodness.”<br />

The next day, as they sat at the table eating breakfast, she saw the 
same scene again. She said, “I can’t believe how dirty those clothes 
are. Someone has to teach that woman how to do the laundry!”<br />

And for the next few days, she kept criticizing her neighbor.<br />

But after a month, as they ate breakfast, she looked through the 
window and was surprised to see very white, clean clothes. “It’s a 
miracle!” the wife told her husband, “Our neighbor finally learned how 
to wash clothes!”<br />

The husband smiled. “Not really. Finally, this morning, I cleaned our windows…”<br />

Patience is not an external problem.<br />

Patience is always an internal problem.<br />

Circumstances don’t cause your impatience. Traffic doesn’t cause your
 impatience. Your unruly child doesn’t cause your impatience.<br />

<em>You </em>cause your impatience.<br />

You need to wash your windows.<br />

<strong>Where Does Your Impatience Come From?</strong></div>
Impatience comes from your <em>desire to control things that you have no control over.</em><br />

James and John wanted to control the Samaritans. When they couldn’t, they got angry.<br />

When you tell little Junior, “Take a bath!” and he dillydallies, you get impatient because you’re not in control.<br />

When a mammoth traffic builds up, you get impatient because you’re not in control.<br />

When the lines in the mall are extra long, you get impatient because you’re not in control.<br />

Don’t get me wrong. The desire to control, by itself, isn’t bad. God gave you the power to control <em>a few things. </em>  For example, parents need to be in control of their home. And managers need to control their companies.<br />

You just need to know the difference between what you can control and what you can’t…<br />

<strong>What Do You Control?</strong></div>
       There are two Areas in your life: The Area of Control and the Area of Concern. You need to know the difference.<br />

Your Area of Control is very small compared to your Area of 
Concern. At the end of the day, you can only control one thing: 
Yourself.<br />

Many times, you can’t control the stimuli around you. But you control your <em>response</em> to that stimuli.<br />

Stephen Covey says that between stimuli and response, there’s a gap. That gap is your power.<br />

Here’s one example.<br />

<strong>What’s Your Response To People’s Faults?</strong></div>
Question: Are you surrounded by people who have faults?<br />

If you are, then you need to listen to this verse from <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD2">the Bible</span>: <em>Make allowance for each other’s faults…</em>(Colossians 3:13)<br />

You can’t control people’s faults. But you can control your response to those faults.<br />

How? Expect imperfection. Do this one thing and you’ll remove many of your frustrations. Your relationships will be happier.<br />

Learn to live with the imperfection of people.<br />

Speaking about imperfection, let me share about my marriage…<br />

<strong>My Marriage Is Fantastic</strong></div>
I have a fantastic marriage. Not perfect. But fantastic.  Reason?  My wife and I have accepted each other’s imperfections.<br />

For example, it takes me 5 minutes to get dressed.<br />

But it takes my wife two hours.<br />

In the first three years of our marriage, this fact bothered me so much.<br />

I’d sit in the car, enduring the agony of waiting for her. I’d grip 
the steering wheel so hard, if it weren’t made of steel, it would have 
become a pretzel. I’d grit my teeth, muttering to myself, “Why in the 
world does she take so much time?”<br />

But for ten years now, the situation has totally changed.<br />

Mind you, she didn’t change.  She still takes 2 hours to dress.<br />

But I’ve changed. I’ve washed my window. I’ve accepted that as part of marrying a beautiful woman.<br />

So what if we’re a little late? It’s not the end of the world.<br />

Oh yes, I still sit in the car and wait for her. But I no longer 
endure it. I enjoy it. I enjoy the quiet. When she finally gets in the 
car, I say, “Hi, gorgeous…”<br />

One more example…<br />

<strong>How Do You Respond To Traffic</strong></div>
You can’t control the traffic.  (Unless you happen to work as a traffic cop.)<br />

Traffic belongs to your Area of Concern.<br />

What can you control? You can control your response to the traffic. 
  Are you going to blow your top or are you going to enjoy the traffic? 
 That’s up to you.<br />

Call me crazy, but I’ve learned to enjoy traffic. When there’s 
traffic, I take it as a gift from God to slow me down. To chat with the 
other passengers. To listen to an inspiring audiotalk. To plan for a 
project. And if I’m not driving, to catch up on my reading.<br />

If you want to become a patient person, you need to do 3 very important things…<br />

<strong>Emergency Steps: Stop, Look, & Listen</strong></div>
If you have problems with your temper, and you feel your anger brewing within you, you want to <em>Stop</em>,<em>Look</em>, and <em>Listen</em>.<br />

<div align="center">
<strong>Step 1: Stop</strong></div>
Are you about to explode?<br />

Count one to ten.<br />

Count one to ten thousand if necessary.<br />

The important thing is to stop what your anger wants you to do at 
that precise moment.  (I know of a few people who’re in jail now because
 they obeyed their anger.)<br />

I know stopping isn’t easy. Someone told me it’s like stopping a landslide when the rocks are already falling.<br />
<br />
In psychology, they call this a “pattern interrupt”. Do something so 
unexpected, it’ll short-circuit your brain pattern. Take a walk. Go out 
and exercise. Slap yourself. Laugh!<br />

Close your eyes, inhale, and breathe in God’s Love.<br />

Visualize you’re in a lovely beach or forest or mountaintop.<br />

Most of all, pray.<br />

That’s what I mean by “Stop”.<br />

Don’t obey your anger. Don’t send that angry email. Don’t send that angry text. Don’t shout that angry word.<br />

Believe me, if you do, you’ll regret it forever.<br />

<strong>You’ll Regret Saying Your Angry Words</strong></div>
I read a story of a boy who had a bad temper.<br />

His father told him, “Son, every time you’re angry, get a nail and hammer it on the fence.”<br />

The son did as instructed.<br />

On the first day, he hammered 37 nails on their wooden fence. But as 
the days went by, he hammered fewer nails each day. He realized it was 
easier to tame his anger than hammer nails.<br />

Finally, a day came when he didn’t hammer a single nail. The boy went
 to his father and told him the good news. “Dad, I’m able to control my 
anger already.”<br />

The father said, “Congratulations son. I’m happy for you. Come, let’s remove the nails from the fence.”<br />

As the son pulled out the last nail from the wooden fence, the father said, “Son, do you see what I see?”<br />

“Nail holes,” the son said, “Lots of them.”<br />

The father looks him in the eye and says, “Son, next time you want to
 say angry words, remember this fence. Even if you apologize later, 
angry words leaves a scar in the hearts of people. Even if you’re 
forgiven, that scar remains for a long time.”<br />

Just stop.<br />

The Bible says, <em>Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak
 and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the 
righteous life that God desires. </em>(James 1:19-20)<br />

Here’s the second step…<br />

<strong>Step 2: Look</strong></div>
Look for God in the difficult situation.<br />

Specifically, look for God’s Love.<br />

Look for Him loving you at that moment of testing.<br />

Look for His Presence in this irritating situation or annoying person.<br />

One day, my flight to Cebu was delayed for 4 hours.<br />

When the announcement was made over the loud speakers, everyone 
around me in the airport grumbled loudly. And the complaining didn’t 
stop. About missed meetings. About lost time. About being stuck in the 
airport.<br />

Delayed flights aren’t in my Area of Control. It’s in my Area of 
Concern. And I repeat, anything in my Area of Concern are things I need 
to entrust to God’s Love<em>. </em>I need to believe that God is doing something behind the scenes, working all things for my good. (Romans 8:28)<br />

So I had a totally different reaction.<br />

I closed my eyes and smiled. I saw God in that situation. In my mind, God was giving me an unexpected 4-hour vacation.<br />

I was like a little kid on Christmas, excited to open a huge 
gift-wrapped box.  I read my book; made new friends; wrote a new 
article; called up my wife; I even walked around the airport for my 
daily exercise.<br />

It was a beautiful surprise gift from God.<br />

I loved it so much, when I have a flight today, I sometimes secretly wish it were delayed.<br />

So just in case you have a flight, and it gets delayed, look for me in the airport. (Sorry, my wishes are powerful.)<br />

Finally, the third step…<br />

<strong>Step 3: Listen</strong></div>
Listen to God’s instructions.<br />

Ask the big question: <em>What’s the wise thing to do? </em><br />

Some people think being patient means being passive.<br />

Not true. You can be patient and proactive at the same time.<br />

One day, my friend was in a bank with a very long line. How long? He 
said he was waiting in the cue for 30 minutes. And all the customers 
were complaining.<br />

Instead of grumbling like everyone else, my friend<em>responded</em> with action. He looked for the manager, and simply (patiently) asked if she could add tellers.<br />

She actually did. She added two more tellers—and instantly, that one long line became three short lines.<br />

In your Area of Control, you control. But in your Area of Concern, you <em>influence.</em><br />

How? Through patient action.<br />

Let me give you another example of patient action…<br />

<strong>A Word To Parents With Temper Problems</strong></div>
Are you a parent with a short fuse?<br />

Let me guess. So far, your temper has been a disaster. It hasn’t worked. Your anger has failed in training your kids.<br />

You’ve learned that no amount of shouting works.<br />

So here’s my suggestion. <em>Change your strategy.</em><br />

Let me give you God’s wisdom.<br />

I read Kevin Leman’s book, <em>Have A New Kid By Friday. </em>He gives fantastic advice. Basically, he tells parents not to get angry when kids misbehave.<br />

He explains why…<br />

<strong>Children Don’t Listen To Anger,</strong></div>

<strong>They Listen To Action</strong></div>

Let me give you an example from Kevin Leman.<br />

4-year old Julio is at the back of the car, throwing a temper tantrum. He screams, “I hate you Mommy!”<br />

Mommy, instead of using anger, uses action.<br />

A few minutes after they arrive home, Julio goes to the kitchen. He 
looks for his milk and cookies—and it’s not there.  At that point, his 
quiet world is discombobulated.  Because kids are creatures of 
habit. Every afternoon, Mommy always prepares milk and cookies.<br />

So Julio goes to his mother and asks, “Mommy, where are my milk and cookies?”<br />

Very calmly, mommy says, “No milk and cookies today.” She then turns around and walks away. (This step is very important.)<br />

Little Julio runs after her. (Kids always do.) He asks, “Why Mommy? Why? Why? Why?”<br />

This is a teachable moment. This is when he is actually open to what 
Mommy has to say.   She says, “Because I didn’t like what you did in the
 car. You had a temper tantrum. (Mommy acts it out just to make it 
clearer to the little guy.) And you said, ‘I hate you, Mommy.’ That hurt
 me very much.”<br />

By this time, little Julio is bawling, “I’m so sorry Mommy! I won’t do it again.”<br />

Mommy says, “I forgive you, Julio.” She hugs him.<br />

That’s when Julio whimpers, his big eyes filled with giant tears, “Mommy, can I have my milk and cookies now?”<br />

Here’s the secret sauce of this powerful action. Mommy says, “No milk and cookies today. You’ll have it tomorrow.”<br />

Believe me, Julio will never forget the lesson.<br />
<br />
<em>And you only have to do this once or twice.</em> He’ll never throw another temper tantrum again.<br />

Let me end…<br />

<div align="center">
<strong>Relax And Trust In God’s Love More</strong></div>
       I repeat: Impatience comes from lack of trust in God’s Love.<br />

How come? You become impatient because of a desire to control things you have no control over.<br />

But where does this desire to control come from?<br />

Sometimes, it comes from love. A genuine concern for others.<br />

But many times, it comes from fear.<br />

<em>I’ve noticed that many times, subconscious fear is the fuel of our impatience. </em><br />

And our greatest fear is the fear of worthlessness.<br />

I know that sounds deep.<br />

But it’s really very simple.<br />

<em>Often, the fear of worthlessness causes your impatience.</em><br />

Let me give you an example.<br />

One day, a mother came up to me and shared to me her total 
frustration with her daughter. She said, “Her grades are so bad. She 
spends hours on the phone. And she looks horrible with her black 
lipstick and black nail polish. Her boyfriend looks like smelly bum. Oh 
Bo, there’s not a day when I don’t shout at her!”<br />

I asked her this question. “Why are you angry?”<br />

“Because… because she’s not acting right! I mean, what will others say? That I’m not a good mother?”<br />

Aha. There lies the real reason for her rage.<br />

The fear of “what other people will say…”<br />

In other words, it’s the fear of <em>social death.</em><br />

It’s the fear of worthlessness that’s driving her anger.<br />

That is why, I believe that the ultimate solution to impatience is trusting in God’s Love.<br />

When you know you’re totally, completely, and absolutely loved by God, you know there’s nothing else to prove.<br />

You relax.<br />

Impatience drains out of your system.<br />

Why was I so angry at my wife because her long preparation time? When
 I dug deeper, I realized that it was because I was afraid of people 
telling me, “Bo is late for our meeting. What a terrible example…”<br />

But then the switch came in my heart. When I realized I was totally, 
completely, and perfectly loved—I knew I was whole. I didn’t need 
anyone’s good opinion about me to make me whole.<br />

There was nothing to prove. I found I no longer cared about what 
other said about me. Fear was gone. I began to relax in God’s Love. And 
my impatience vanished as well.<br />

Because perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18).<br />

The Importance of Today

<b>today is the most important day in our life.</b><br />
<br />
<br />Today is the first day of the rest of your life. After a less than <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">productive</span>, exhausted, unfocused, day yesterday, that left me feeling a bit in the blah, I went to sleep <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD2">visualizing</span>
 what I wanted in life that I didn’t do anything to accomplish yesterday
 or this week so far. I was inspired to write this today because when I 
woke up, due to my positive <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">visualizations</span>
 and reflection, my first thought this morning, was: “Today is the first
 day of the rest of MY life”. I popped out of bed and was motivated 
again.<br />

<br />

Now why is this thought so powerful and motivating?<br />

Well, here is the reasoning behind it. Every day, we go about doing 
our usual thing & our usual routine. We operate almost in a robot 
state of mind and reality. We think about our problems, what we have to 
do, when will we be able do it, and sometimes it leads us to stop 
thinking about things we could do to benefit our future. We just do what
 we need to get by for the day. We wake up in our reality, knowing where
 we are in life, and what we want, but forget to stop, internalize our 
“real wants for the future”, & prioritize doing things that day to 
get ahead. We often just do whatever we “have” to do just to get by… due
 to fear, insecurity, laziness, or procrastination. Then suddenly we 
find ourselves feeling unmotivated, down, and in a blah state of non 
movement which is hard to get out of. So here are some reminders to get 
you back on track and motivate you like I did to myself this morning!<br />

1.) YOU are totally in CONTROL of YOUR WORDS today. (YOU CHOOSE to SAY THEM)<br />

a.) The way you speak to others today, words you choose to use, and 
tone of your voice, will influence others thoughts, perception, and 
reaction towards you. Their reaction will bounce onto you & either 
make you feel negative, or fuel you with positive thoughts and feelings.
 How you make people feel about themselves is important. It benefits you
 & can cause conflict or keep it away. It can also energize you when
 a happy person projects the gratitude of how you made them feel onto 
you. You control this! Huge secret. Use it. <img alt=";)" class="wp-smiley" src="http://kamukamo.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif" /> <br />

2.) YOU are totally in CONTROL of YOUR THOUGHTS and FOCUS today. (YOU CHOOSE to THINK THEM)<br />

a.)What will you focus on today in the scheme of life to make positive changes?<br />

b.)What will you focus on today that helps you MOVE FORWARD in life towards a goal?<br />

c.)What will you choose to purposefully NOT focus on and push aside because it’s wasting your time?<br />
3.) YOU are totally IN CHARGE of YOUR ACTIONS today. (YOU CHOOSE to DO THEM & when you WILL)<br />

a.)What are you going to do to fix a problem, mend a relationship, 
fix yourself, or advance yourself towards a goal you want to accomplish?<br />

b.)When are you going to do it? Today is a good day to start. Right now. Take the first step.<br />

WHAT we do & WHEN we will do it ( are the important factors here! )<br />

If you think about it, it’s rather exciting! I can control everything
 in my day from what I say, to what I do, to actually influence others 
positively (which benefits me), and to be one step more accomplished 
tomorrow! So can you. We have that power. What you decide to focus on 
and do today will affect your tomorrow either negatively OR positively. 
If you focus on building and accomplishing positive actions today, 
instead of just staying paralyzed in a rut, or walking in a circle of 
daily life “I have to do’s” only, YOU WILL not only have a new positive 
built tomorrow, you will be motivated to keep building through your 
accomplishment. It feels good to get something positive done and built 
for the future. We instinctively want to build on it more as it gets 
bigger. And remember: nothing that happened in the past, or yesterday, 
dictates what will happen in your future and where your life will end 
up. Unless you let it.<br />

So Take charge of it. Who cares that yesterday wasn’t that great and 
nothing got done. I didn’t! Lol. Oh well! WE can make up for it and move
 ahead today! I’m more motivated today to do! TODAY is the rest of my 
NEW improved exciting fast forward pace life! That’s what I’m thinking! <img alt=":)" class="wp-smiley" src="http://kamukamo.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" /> <br />

TAKE charge of your thoughts, focus, and actions right now. Think of 
& DO something positive to move you foward today for tomorrow… so 
you can build on it. Now! Stop focusing on what you didn’t do, the rut 
your in, what you need to do. YOU CAN at least get started on something 
for the future and do one small thing to get started. Build small things
 on one another and then get on a roll with out realizing it. But you 
have to decide you are going to do it, and start. Not tommorrow. Today. 
You are in control. Not me or the person next to you. What you do today 
affects tommorrow. If you do nothing, then tommorrow your back where you

Opening</h2>
This day of academic ceremony must be a day of touching, personal 
memories. It is also a day to pause, and give honor and praise to your 
parents and to the good Lord for the grace to be at this place, at this 
time. While all of us may be seated, we’re actually standing on their 
shoulders, proud and thankful. Your years in college were a journey of 
discovery and preparation, a discovery of yourself and the gifts 
bestowed upon you. You’re now about to commence a new journey, of 
becoming an adult, of finding your place in society, of starting a 
future. Today, I’d like to share with you my own journey, as I traveled 
from being a student, to being a professional manager and an OFW, and 
now, an entrepreneur and corporate activist.<br />

<h2>
<strong>First part of the journey: A Student</strong></h2>
The first part of my journey begins with my family. My lolo 
(grandfather) started as a public school teacher in Pampanga and Tarlac,
 rising through the ranks to become superintendent of public schools 
and, eventually, secretary of education. My dad began his career as a 
messenger at Philippine National Bank, and retired as president of 
Traders Royal Bank, one of the larger banks in the ’80s. During my 
elementary years, I had ten centavos to buy a bottle of Coke, five 
centavos for crackers, another ten centavos to take the bus home from 
San Beda in Mendiola, which I made sure I wouldn’t lose, otherwise I 
would have walked home. In college, my weekly allowance at the Ateneo 
was P10, and that included my jeepney fares. I have a lot of classmates 
who have cars and others even have their own drivers. They were lucky. 
Someday, I said to myself, I will reach all those. My scholarships in 
both San Beda and Ateneo were only my lucky charms.<br />

In late 1965, as my own graduation was approaching, I had come home 
from the Ateneo one Saturday afternoon, and spoke with my dad about 
taking an MBA in the States. I was met with silence, which meant there 
wasn’t enough money for an education abroad, that if I really wanted it,
 I had find a way myself. Fortunately, Procter & Gamble was offering
 a rare scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. 
It was a national competition. I entered-and won. For three generations 
of my family, life meant coping with challenges despite modest means, 
relying on God-given talent, hard work and a passionate determination to
 succeed.<br />
<br />
<h2>
<strong>Second part of the journey: A professional manager</strong></h2>
Let me now turn to the second part of this journey. After two years 
in Philadelphia, I returned home, hopeful about landing a managerial 
position in a large company. I struck out at first bat. My benefactor, 
Procter & Gamble, turned down my application. So I ended up taking 
the first job I was offered, as executive assistant to the president at 
Phinma for P1,000 a month. Without any job experience, we can’t be 
choosers, right? Grab the first decent job that comes your way, immerse 
yourself in work, and soon, you’ll find the right job, or it will find 
you.<br />

After six years with Phinma, I decided to work abroad. There were the
 usual reasons: the glamor of being an expat in Hong Kong, the stifling 
staleness of my local career but, more importantly, I needed to find 
myself, to prove that I can stand on my own and succeed. The warmth of 
family ties, the comfort of an extended family system so embedded in our
 society were indeed beguiling, but I wanted to assert my independence.<br />

I was recruited by Bancom International, a Philippine investment bank
 based in Hong Kong. It was a stimulating experience. I learned the 
dynamics of international finance from my Chinese colleagues, not from 
the Filipino executives. Thereafter, I was seconded to a joint venture 
investment bank with <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">American Express</span>.
 I had expected to be appointed CEO of that new bank, but wasn’t. While 
disappointed and even depressed, I soldiered on and, sure enough, this 
venture failed inside of two years. A huge dilemma confronted a young 
man of 30 years: return to Manila or stay with <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD2">AMEX</span>?
 I decided to remain a soldier of fortune in Hong Kong. Why? Because 
after this setback, I wanted to prove something to myself. I felt I had 
to prove to AMEX the Filipino can. Indeed, after four years with AMEX, I
 received a phone call from my boss in London. He said, “You’ve outgrown
 Hong Kong and are now ready for London, and to fast track your career.”
 After reflection, I politely said, no. I’ve proven the point to myself 
and to AMEX, and that had been enough. Besides, I felt Asia is my home — and so it shall be.<br />

<h2>
<strong>Third part: An entrepreneur and corporate activist</strong></h2>
The third, and final part, starts with First Pacific. Whilst working 
in the region, I met some clients – foremost being Anthoni Salim – who 
were willing to support my idea of a regional banking and trading 
business. With their help, I founded First Pacific in Hong Kong in 1981.
 I started out with only six people, on 50 square meters of office 
space, and little capital. Now, the companies that constitute First 
Pacific have sales of $5 billion, with more than 60,000 employees across
 the region. But I won’t tell you about our successes at First Pacific. 
Instead, I’ll describe our failures – some of which indeed became total 
failures, but some of which we turned around and made a success.<br />
<br />
In 1989, we were negotiating to acquire Hanimax, maker of middle to 
low-end cameras based in Sydney, Australia. I took the overnight flight 
to Sydney from Hong Kong, confident that when I arrived the following 
morning, a letter from an international bank approving our financing 
would await me. But lo and behold, it was a letter of disapproval. So 
there I was in Sydney, committed to purchase Hanimax, but without enough
 money to complete it. Providentially, there was a competing bidder who 
sought to take us out of the race by offering a sum of money. That 
practice is called “greenmail.” Our gambit won $7 million that day when 
we had no cards to play. But there’s a sequel to this. Buoyed by 
confidence – perhaps overconfidence, even hubris – we were off to the 
races again, and decided quickly to buy another company. This was Tech 
Pacific, Australia’s largest distributor of <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">computer products</span>.
 It was indeed a large company with sales in excess of a billion 
dollars! Well, it was a disaster. It took us three years, and enormous 
pain and effort, to turn its fortunes around. I fell sick from stress 
and anxiety and, on several occasions, contemplated resigning. But we 
stood to our tackle and, after those three years, Tech Pacific is now 
Asia’s largest distributor of computer products.<br />

In 1998, I came home, after 22 years abroad – after what father 
(Roque) Ferriols often calls “the days of wasted youth.” When we 
invested in PLDT seven years ago, we faced the massive task of repair 
and renewal. Critics told us that we couldn’t change the culture of 
monopoly, that misdemeanors in PLDT couldn’t be eradicated, that our 
fixed line business had no future. But we made the tough and unpopular 
decisions at PLDT. Like reducing the number of employees from 14,000 to 
9,000. Like changing dubious practices and encouraging honesty and 
transparency. Like converting the mindset of bureaucrats to that of 
innovators and entrepreneurs. Decisions about people are always 
difficult for us because First Pacific is an Asian company with Asian 
values. But head count reduction was critical for PLDT to survive.<br />

Now that PLDT has recovered, and is now the most profitable company 
in the country, my confidence in the Filipino’s ability to succeed has 
been absolutely affirmed. In fact, despite the downsizing I mentioned 
earlier, we now have more people under our wings – about 19,000 – simply
 because PLDT is now a different company. And to most of you who might 
be familiar with Piltel or Talk N’ Text – it was a company in extremis. 
I’ve had to tell creditor banks that Piltel could not pay its debts – 
the first time I’ve done that in my life. My officemates told me to 
close Piltel. I didn’t agree. I believed that the cellular frequency it 
owns, as well as its brand, are potentially valuable, as they have 
become today. Also, I did not want to imperil the financial health of 
local banks to which Piltel owed much.<br />

After five years of rehab, Piltel’s return to profitability has been 
close to supernatural. It is now the country’s most profitable company –
 after PLDT and Smart. Finally, some of you have raised with me the 
question – is business bad? Let me respond by saying, business is not 
all bad. It is people – some people at least – that may make business 
bad. No business can prosper in the long term without the right values. 
The best performing companies are those that manage their businesses 
which meet ethical standards. Transparency, accountability, integrity, 
discipline – all these good governance principles – must permeate every 
policy, every process, of the company, as they do at First Pacific and 
PLDT.<br />

<h2>
<strong>Closing:</strong></h2>
Thefore I close, I’d like to make a personal request. I’d like to ask
 each of you a favor. Give me bragging rights. Do something great. 
Sometime in the future, I want to hear some incredible thing you’ve 
done. And I’d like to brag that I spoke at your graduation. In return, I
 offer you a few more pieces of advice. Keep it real. Stay true to 
what’s best in yourself, to the best of your experience here at the 
Ateneo. Trust your instincts. Believe in yourself. Engage in sports, 
you’ll need it as you age. Make art, or at least, value it. Be brave. Be
 bold. Find something that moves you or pisses you off, but do something
 about it. You have a voice, speak up.<br />
Take a stand for what’s right. Make a change. You may not always be 
popular, but you’ll be part of something larger and greater than 
yourself. Besides, making history is cool, isn’t it? But I also want to 
offer a warning: you will meet people who’ll entice you to compromise 
your principles. They’ll try to seduce you and distract you with money, 
power, security and perhaps, most dangerously, a sense of belonging. 
Don’t let them; it’s not worth it.<br />
You can have genuine values and still get that job. You can have a conscience and still make money.<br />

Let me send you off with one final thought.<strong> I was born poor, 
but poor was not born in me. And it shouldn’t be born in you either. You
 can make it. Whatever you may wish to do with your future, you can make
 it. It gets dark sometimes, but morning comes always. Suffering breeds 
character. Character breeds faith. In the end, faith will not

There once a man who went walking along a cliff-edge. He strayed from the path, lost his <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">footing</span>,
 and fell over the edge. As he fell towards the deep blue sea, he 
grabbed at a branch of thorns. Hanging there, daring not to let go, the 
man began to shout
“Is there anybody there?”<br />

The man thought for a moment, and then he shouted<br />

This may sound funny, but the funnier part is that the story is not 
just a fictional story. This happens in real life. This is a true to 
life story. This is very common among us, and maybe, this is also your 
story.<br />

Just like the man in the story, there were times that we suffer from 
too much pain and yet we keep on holding on to the source of the pain. 
The longer we hold on, the longer the pain is. Although we realize d 
this fact, why are there so many people still afraid to let go? The 
answer is, because of fear. It is because we are afraid to the bad 
things that may happen to us afterwards. We forget to trust God, to 
trust the future.<br />

And the temptation to just "END" it all was overpowering. Then, the time of enlightenment came. I realized that though my intention of finding myself was good, I did all the wrong things. Then, the feeling of GUILT came. And it was more painful. I regret doing the things I've done and how I wish I could just take them all back.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">MG: How did you overcome this?</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

I used to think that I'd look weak if I ask for some assistance. Now I know that it just makes me look stupid to act like I can do things without them, when I know I can't.<br />

Third. Saying you're sorry is never an easy feat. It is an admission of guilt or fault. But <span style="font-size: large;">asking for forgiveness is not a weakness. It is strength</span>. People make mistakes.. I made some mistakes. But the important thing is I learned something. I've changed my ways and I'm trying to do better.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

How to Fulfill A Dream by Bo Sanchez

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">Do you want to fulfill your dreams?You need to surrender your dreams to God.Many people have<b> </b>taught<b> </b>you to <i>seek </i>your dreams,but very few have taught you to <i>surrender </i>your dreams.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">Don’t  get me wrong. Seeking your dreams is important. I always tell people,  “You need to know your dream, define your dream, and pursue your  dream. You need to have a firm grip on your dream—to eat, talk, walk,  and sleep with your dream. I believe that if you don’t seek your dream  with fierce commitment, your dreams won’t come true.”</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">But there’s a second phase to fulfilling your dreams.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">At a certain point, after <i>seeking</i> your dream, you need to <i>surrender</i> your dream to God. </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">Or else you won’t have peace.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">In  the Bible, God told Abraham to sacrifice his son on the altar (Genesis  22). From personal experience, I’ve noticed that God asks us to offer  what is most dear to us. </span><br />

font-size: 14pt;">Let me say it in another way. There are two extremes that you need to avoid. </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">First  is when we have no dreams. There are people I know who wake up in the  morning not knowing what to do.  Because they have no dreams. And a  person who has no dreams has already started dying.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">That’s  why every Sunday at the Feast (our weekly spiritual gathering), I teach  people how to dream. I teach people to write 7 dreams on their <i>Novena to God’s Love </i>(it’s a little booklet we give to all first timers)and pray for them everyday.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">The  second extreme is when their dream consumes their life, it actually  destroys them, or destroys their family, or destroys their health, or  destroys their relationship with God.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">These are people who say, “Unless I get a husband, I won’t be happy.” </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">Or “Unless I get healed, I won’t be happy.” </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">Or “Unless I get a baby, I won’t be happy.” </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">Or “Unless I get a house, I won’t be happy.” </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">Or “Unless I get a US Visa, I won’t be happy.”</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">How  do you know if you need to surrender your dream to God? When your dream  becomes more important than your life. When your dream steals away your  peace. When your dream steals away your God.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">What does surrendering your dream mean?</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">I’m not asking you to give up your dream. I’m asking you to give up your attachment to a specific version of your dream. </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">And that also means surrendering your attachment to a specific timetable of your dream.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">Surrender  means trusting that God has the best version in mind for you. That  God’s best blessing will come in the best time and in the best way.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">When  you surrender your dream, you’re saying, “Even if I don’t get this  dream, I’ll still be happy. Because my trust is in you, Lord.”</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">I  believe something magical happens when you put your dream on the  altar. When you surrender, you hear God speak to your heart and say,  “Child, will you still want your dream if I tell you that I have  something better for you?”</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">I  want you to say this prayer to God right now: “Lord, I’m trusting  you. I’ll still seek my dream with joyful passion, but I will surrender  my attachment to the details of my dream. I will open myself to your  wonderful surprises.”</span></div><div align="center"><b><span style="color: black; font-size: 16pt;"> God Will Allow Temporary Disappointments</span></b></div><div align="center"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">       My mother wanted me to be a priest.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">        When I was a little boy, she told me, “I’m praying that you become a  priest.  I’m not forcing you. But I’ll be the happiest woman in the  world if you become a priest.”</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">       Talk about subtle emotional manipulation (Haha).</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">        When I was 16 years old, I took up philosophy for my college course, so  that just in case God really called me to priesthood, I’ll be  ready. (A.B. Philosophy is required for priesthood.)</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">After  college, I also took all the required subjects for a Masters degree in  Theology, again, just in case God really wanted me to be a priest. All  the Bishop had to do was send me to a seminary for a year or two—and  viola—I was ready for ordination.</span></div><div></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">But God never called me to be a priest.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="color: black; font-size: 14pt;">When  Mom learned that I had a girlfriend, it broke her heart. Aside from the  fact that no woman was good enough for her son (Except for Mother  Mary), her dream for me to become “Fr. And  it doesn't mean that they are a bad person it just means that their  part in the story is over. And you've got to know when people's part in  your story is over so that you don't keep trying to raise the dead.  You've got to know when it's dead.<br />

You've got to know when  it's over. Let me tell you something. I've got the gift of good-bye.  It's the tenth spiritual gift, I believe in good-bye. It's not that I'm  hateful, it's that I'm faithful, and I know whatever God means for me to  have He'll give it to me. And if it takes too much sweat I don't need  it. Stop begging people to stay.<br />

A Pencil Has Priority</span></b></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The  inside of a pencil is more important than the outside of the  pencil. Because the insides are connected to its purpose. On the  outside, it could be have dirt, have bite marks, have chipped paint, but  that doesn’t matter as long as its insides are working.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">       Like the pencil, your purpose is connected to what’s inside you, not what’s outside you. </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">What  am I saying? Your money or your house or your car or your watch or your  cell phone won’t make you happy. It’s what’s inside you that will make  you happy.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">        The Divine imprint is in you. Inside you is the image and likeness of  God. The Bible says “Christ dwells in you.” (Colossians 1:27) and that  you are the “Temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 3:16).</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">       Value what’s in you more than what’s outside you!</span></div><div align="center" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: 16pt;">3. A Pencil Needs Pain</span></b></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">A  pencil has to go through painful sharpening if it’s to be useful. If it  doesn’t go through pain, it won’t be able to fulfill its purpose.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">In  the same way, you need to prepare yourself to go through painful  sharpening—if you want God to use you. You will go through trials to  test you, teach you, and train you to be better than you were before.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Look back into your life.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">There  must be a reason why you went through what you went through. There’s a  reason why you went through that molestation, that separation, that  abortion, that deprivation, isolation, that temptation, that purgation,  that tribulation…</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">I  was molested as a child. I will not wish it on my worst enemy. Yet I am  able to speak words of healing today because of the pain that I went  through.</span></div><div align="center" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: 16pt;">4. A Pencil Needs Perseverance</span></b></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">If  it makes a mistake, the pencil doesn’t give up. Why? Because it knows  it has an eraser. The pencil simply erases its mistakes, and moves  on. It doesn’t beat itself and condemn itself and say, “Oh, I’m so  terrible. Why did I make a mistake? I’m a total failure.” No such  words. When it makes a mistake, it simply erases and moves on.</span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">        In the same way, when you make a mistake, God gave you an eraser. It’s  the most powerful eraser in the world. It’s called forgiveness. </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">God forgives you. And asks you to forgive yourself. And asks you to forgive others. </span></div><div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Use your eraser everyday!</span></div><div align="center" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;"><b><span style="font-size: 16pt;">5.
